Low fat diets have been popular for about 15 years and yet sadly Americans on average are getting fatter with every passing year. Unfortunately this trend is “catching on” in other countries, too. Much of the food labeled low fat actually is loaded with extra sugar instead! Not a good trade off.

Low carb or high protein diets have been around for decades and have always been controversial. There are concerns whether it is healthy to completely eliminate large groups of healthy foods such as fruit and whole grains. And initially they seem to work so well because you are losing water, not fat. You aren’t getting thinner, you’re getting dehydrated.

And what about counting calories? Besides being tedious, your body will adjust to a lower calorie intake and slow down your metabolism to match, so now you have to eat less and less.

Adequate fat burning hormones will put you in the “fat burning zone” 24/7 so your body will burn fat even while you sleep. Produce enough of these and you’ll never struggle with your weight again.

Your body has a complex system of hormones that regulates how it will store and burn the food you eat. Your body produces fat storing or fat burning hormones depending on the amount and type of food consumed. Here is a simple version of what happens:

When you diet and your body senses there isn’t enough food, it produces “fat storing hormones” When you go on any food restriction diet, your body senses it’s in danger – that there isn’t enough food and your metabolism slows right down, going into “starvation mode”. Your body does this by producing fat storing hormones. This makes your body burn fat more efficiently which makes it harder for you to lose weight.

There are certain foods that have been shown to raise metabolism, but that is only a small part of how you use food to lose weight.

Some foods that have been cited as metabolism boosting are fruits, such as apples, grapefruit and berries. Nuts of all kinds, especially almonds. Oatmeal and beans such as navy beans or kidney beans. Protein sources such as yogurt, whole eggs, turkey and either grass fed beef or bison. I get my bison burgers at Trader Joe’s. And healthy fats such as avocados and coconut oil. Coconut oil has gotten a bad rap but is actually a very healthy fat that boosts your metabolism.

Eating spices such as cinnamon, curry, and hot peppers have been shown to speed up metabolism. Grapefruit has unique metabolism boosting properties, but interacts negatively with many medications, so please check your medicine cabinet first. Any questions, please ask your doctor or pharmacist. Grandma was right. Don’t skip breakfast! The act of eating breakfast increases your metabolism the rest of the day. By all means, incorporate these foods in your diet often if you like them.

But by far, the more important thing you can do with food is use it to manipulate your body into producing fat burning hormones in ample amounts. You can do this by eating the right kinds of food, in the right balance, at the right frequency. The best drinks to raise your metabolism are water and green tea. Not very exciting, I know.. But more important is what NOT to drink when trying to lose weight or for your general health.

You really need to wean yourself off of drinking sweet drinks all day long. It is one of the worst ways to sabotage your weight loss that I can think of.

Sweet drinks make you want more sweets. It’s just that simple. Given a choice it is better to have sugar than high fructose corn syrup which is hidden in most processed drinks and foods. When you consume it, your body doesn’t register that you’ve eaten anything, so it doesn’t allay your hunger at all – it actually makes you hungrier!

Drinking diet soda is even worst. It has been shown to stimulate your appetite, increase your craving for sweets, increase your fat storage hormone levels, and makes you eat more, besides the negative health effects of artificial sweeteners.

Coffee has been shown to raise your metabolism, but you should only drink it black or with a little milk. No more frappacino’s – they can be over 500 calories! Drink one of these a day, and you’ll gain a pound a week! Since coffee is addictive and diuretic, I don’t consider it a health item, so drink in moderation if you love it.

I make my own delicious iced teas. Green tea now comes in flavored versions like mango, blueberry, and peach. If you want a totally caffeine free tea, try the peach, cherry, or raspberry”zingers”. If you drink them iced you will burn an extra 200 calories per day bringing them to body temperature.

If you like your teas sweet, add stevia, a healthy non-caloric, sweetener made from a naturally sweet green leafy shrub. It comes in little packs just like the blue, pink and yellow stuff. Carry it with you to work and restaurants to sweeten iced tea or add to water with lemon for a guilt free lemonade.

You could lose weight without exercise, but you won’t get the same results. And it will be harder and take you longer if you rely on diet alone.

Although you might think what you want to do is lose weight, what you actually want to do is more specific than that. You really want to lose fat and inches, not just weight, while you gain muscle.

Exercise will help you have the body you’ve always wanted in so many ways! Exercise will help you look better and feel better. It will give you more energy. It will make you stronger. It will make you toned, not just thin.

There are billion dollar industries out there built around taking advantage of your hope that there is a magic pill.

Diet pills, worst case can be dangerous, and can have terrible side effects. Some will cause cramps, gas, diarrhea, or the dreaded, embarrassing “Alli – oops”. You know that unmentionable leakage problem. Some can increase your blood pressure, cause irregular heart beat and insomnia. Some can cause dehydration, liver problems and worst case, even death.

Herbal supplements are not adequately tested for safety or whether or not they actually work, or whether they even contain what they say they contain. Most are useless at helping you lose weight. This seems counter intuitive, but the first thing you think of to lose weight is to start eating less. But that is precisely what NOT to do. You don’t want to start restricting the amount of food you eat even further, putting your body into starvation mode. That will start slowing down your metabolism even more!

Next, don’t give up out of frustration and undo all your hard work. Now is not the time to pick up that pint of ice cream or give up exercising! That certainly won’t help!

  • Be sure you really are in a plateau. The scale is NOT the best indicator, your body fat is. Take your measurements. Calculate your body fat. You may be losing inches but not weight and that is a good thing! You might be losing body fat which is more important than pounds anyway. We have been brainwashed into believing the number on the scale is all-important, especially us gals.
  • Only weigh yourself once a week. Don’t torture yourself by weighing yourself any more often than that.
  • And make sure you aren’t aiming for an unrealistic goal for your bone structure and age. If you are 40, do you really need to get back down to what you weighed in high school? Is it even wise or healthy?

You remember that definition of insanity? Doing what you’ve been doing and hoping for different results? So if you have decided you are stuck in a plateau and it really is reasonable for you to lose more weight than you already have, you’ll need to shake things up a bit and make some changes.

You need to provide your body with some variety. You can’t keep doing what you’ve been doing and expect for different results.

Change your exercise routine, whatever you normally do, and do something different and do more exercise. If you usually do yoga take brisk walks. If you usually walk, lift some weights. Always make sure you include some strength training which is great at boosting your metabolism, better than long cardio sessions. One fitness professional I know tells his clients to exercise more AND eat more to break a weight loss plateau!

Revisit what you are eating. Keep a food journal for a week to keep yourself honest. You might find you’ve been cheating in small ways that can add up. If you normally eat 3 meals per day, switch to 6 smaller meals. Make sure you eat some protein at each meal and snack. And never skip breakfast!

Some additional lifestyle changes you should make include: Get plenty of sleep. Lack of sleep increases fat storing hormones. Reduce stress as much as you can, which also increases fat storing hormones. Increase your general activity level. If you sit at a desk all day, get up and move around at least once an hour. Do some stretches while waiting for your computer to turn on or while waiting for the microwave to heat your food. Throw in a few extra brisk walks each week.

Do all these things, and your weight loss plateau should be history.

  • What does their website look like? Does it look professional? It should contain contact information and a privacy policy, as well.
  • Is there an unconditional guarantee? You’ve probably already wasted enough money, right? I’d say a 60 day money back guarantee would be sufficient time for you to implement a program and see whether it works for you.
  • Is this program based in science or just some fad diet? Get a program that is SCIENCE based. That will increase the chances that the program will give you the results you want.
  • Does the program mention boosting metabolism or how to increase fat burning hormones? It should because that is the key to permanent weight loss.
  • Do you need to buy prepackaged food? If so, RUN the other way. They are expensive and unhealthy to live off of. They lack in fresh fruits and vegetables and are high in sodium. But the worse thing is they teach you nothing about proper eating or lowering your metabolism. Weight lost this way won’t last.
  • Is there support?
